1) Perceptions of places connected to the afterlife (Osorezan, Tateyama in Toyama Prefecture, Hakone, Rokuhara area in Kyoto, Hirano-ku in Osaka), especially in relation to the construction of social memory, touristization and discrimination. 2) Haunted places and tourism in contemporary Kyoto, particularly the perception of the environment and the relation between bodily perceptions, feelings, rumours and memory. 3) Experiences of possession and exorcism in contemporary Japan, as well as in Italy and Austria (Roman Catholic), with a particular focus on the healing process and the relation between religious healing and biomedicine. 4) Remote Religious Healing, Affect and Feeling in the Virtual Space.
Overview of the research
My main field is contemporary Japan, but I have carried out ethnographic research also in Italy and Austria. My research has focused on experiences with spirits and social suffering, especially in relation to the perception of space and place (particularly places related to death and the afterlife), rumors and discrimination, construction of social memory and “tradition”, tourism and commodification, spirit possession, exorcism and religious/spiritual healing. From a theoretical perspective, I focus on the anthropology of the body, bodily perceptions, affect and emotions, as well as construction of identity and digital anthropology.
