• Research Topics

  French Classical Tragedy and its relations with Literary Theories (especially Rhetoric and Poetics) of the 16th and 17th centuries

• Overview of the research

  In the 17th century France, as the purpose of tragedy is shifting from “instruction (docere)” to “moving (movere)”, it is necessary to emphasize the relationship between so-called "rhetoric of passion" and tragedy itself. The relationship between rhetoric and poetics, which is inextricably linked in terms of "persuasion" in Aristotle, has been replaced by the problem of a blend of moral lessons and pleasure since Horatius. In these traditions, the purpose of our research is to analyze how the theories of the Renaissance and 17th century literary theorists are reflected in the works of the same period, and to raise the theoretical issues involved both in creation and reception of literary works in the late 17th century.
