Overview of the research
This study analyzes Japan’s leading female documentary filmmakers, their works, and their production activities. It not only engages with central debates in documentary film studies—such as ethical issues concerning subjects, the relationship with technology, and the role of documentary film as a medium for recording and memory—but also explores the ecological structure of the film industry—including production, distribution, and exhibition—by observing the processes of women-led innovation and production.
