Profile
Profile
I was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, but most of my education and academic career has been outside Bulgaria. I obtained my Master's in Political Economy from Moscow State University (Russian Federation) and my PhD from Kanazawa University, Japan. The title of my PhD dissertation was“The Role of Industrial Policy in Japan’s Postwar Economic Development from the Perspective of Comparative Institutional Economics". One of the questions that I tried to answer in my PhD dissertation was whether the postwar Japanese model pf economic development can be applied to transition economies and developing countries. After completing the PhD, my research was about the political-economic transformation in the former socialist countries with a focus on the countries that joined the EU in 2004 and 2007. I used the analytical framework of institutional economics and evolutionary economics in that research. My current research is about the energy transition in emerging economies and developing countries. My goal is to deepen the understanding about the motivations, driving forces and the barriers to the wider diffusion of renewable energy in emerging economies and developing countries. At present, I am doing comparative study of four country cases: Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar and Kenya. In addition, I am very much interested in how advanced countries like Japan can contribute to the energy transition in those countries.
I am also the coordinator of the Sustainable Economy Research Group at the Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability (GSAIS). We hold regular seminars and workshops that are open to anyone who is interested in topics related to how to change the current economic system to a sustainable one. In addition, we have research projects where members of our group do joint research. An example is the research we did about the solar PV industries in China and Japan. Furthermore, I have organized in 2015-2018 three international symposiums at GSAIS. I am the research supervisor of eight PhD students at GSAIS. In addition to the research supervision, I also provide support for their overseas internships at international organizations. Four of my students have already completed their internships at IEA, OECD, and UNDP.
Motivations, drivers and barriers to the diffusion of renewable energy in emerging and developing countries
Overview of the research
The goal of my present research is to explain the variation in the degree to which emerging and developing countries have been deploying renewable energy (RE). To achieve that goal, I am doing comparative case studies that help identify in depth the drivers and challenges of the energy transformation in various countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Kenya, Poland and Bulgaria.
