      Research

Research Topics, Overview of the research

      • Research Topics

I am interested in forest carbon budget, combining tree ecophysiology and ecosystem ecology
      • Overview of the research

The research projects I have developed the last 25 years concern two main axes. First, the phenotypic plasticity and the interspecific differences in response to environmental factors (water, excess light, shade, CO2, temperature) in trees, with a specific interest in photoinhibition, photorespiration and mesophyll conductance that were successfully addressed by coupling gas exchange with chlorophyll fluorescence. Second, the contribution of root and soil to the carbon budget of forests and tree plantations, both in temperate and tropical areas, with a special attention to environmental controls and to carbon partitioning among ecosystem compartments, exploring the large possibilities offered by stable isotope tracing, first based on natural abundance and then using pulse labelling. I recently estimated phloem carbon translocation belowground at stand level in a hinoki cypress stand, combining anatomical observation of inner bark, measurement of soluble sugar concentration in the phloem and rough estimate of the turgor pressure gradient. I have clearly identified that having precise and continuously monitored values of the turgor pressure gradient is a prerequisite for reliable estimation of carbon translocation. This is what I am currently addressing. In parallel, since five years, I am interested in the methane budget of forest ecosystems, and more specifically to the role of vegetation. I am currently seeking to use stable isotopes of methane to deepen our understanding of the contribution of trees.
