Research Topics
Philosophy of education: Philosophy of education and pedagogical anthropology in modern Japan, especially the Kyoto School of education
Overview of the research
I conduct research that unpacks the philosophy and pedagogy of the Kyoto School, centered on Kitaro Nishida, with a particular focus on their mentor-disciple relationships and educational practices. The Kyoto School thinkers grew up as Japan was developing its modern school system. Consequently, they engaged with Western philosophy and education while remaining connected to pre-modern, non-Western culture, cultivation, and spirituality. Relying on the complexity of their ideas and their unique strangeness compared to modern educational discourse, my goal is to explore the confusion and existential hardships people experience within the framework of modern education.
