    • Profile

      He received his doctorate in physics from Kyoto University in 1993.
      Although his research is based on non-equilibrium statistical physics and nonlinear dynamics focusing on rhythmic phenomena, his current interests span a wide range of topics including theoretical neuroscience, complex networks, dynamical networks of active elements, the application of Bayesian statistics for analyzing nonlinear dynamical systems.

      • Overview of the research

        In general, the type of systems we consider consist of many dynamic elements (for example, neurons, cities, people) that interact to form networks (neural synapses, transportation networks, friendship networks). Such systems in which these elements and the network structures through which they are connected evolve simultaneously constitute self-organizing networks. I study the cooperative behavior exhibited within such network systems formed from many interacting elements in many contexts, using the methods of non-linear dynamics and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. The specific research topics are listed below.
        1. Theoretical neural science (mathematical modeling of the brain)
        2. A collection of dynamical systems linked through a network with evolving structure (neurons, social networks, etc.)
        3. Analysis of rhythm phenomena (entrainment transition)
        4. Analysis of large data sets from the dynamical systems point of view (Bayesian statistics and Monte Carlo methods)
