Professor KANTOUSH has been working at the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) of Kyoto University since 2014. He is collaboratively leading water and sediment-related disasters. Prof. Kantoush is actively involved in projects related to flash flood management in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Professor Kantoush’s industrial expertise is predominantly pertinent to Wadi flash floods, integrated flood and sediment management, dam upgrading projects, reservoir sedimentations and sediment management techniques, and river projects. His research interests span flood and sediment management at the river and Wadi basins.
      • Overview of the research

The environment surrounding the water flowing in rivers and the sediments, such as rocks and sand that they produce, is being altered by human activities such as dam construction, irrigation expansion, deforestation, and sand mining, threatening food security, water supply, and the riverine environment. I am working to improve river ecosystems and strengthen the resilience of surrounding areas in the face of climate change by developing image-based sediment transport monitoring techniques and studying the relationship between sediment and floods at the river basin scale. We are also sharing our knowledge and practices in Japan with Southeast Asian countries such as the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia and proposing strategies to reduce disaster risks while securing water resources. As rivers worldwide face similar challenges, I aim to develop creative integrated river basin management approaches. As a contribution to solving global flood and sediment issues, my group has initiated research for “Wadi” flash floods in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Wadi is an Arabic word that refers to a dry river channel that is equivalent to a river basin or valley. The arid areas in the MENA region are hot, and deserts have rare and irregular rainfall. However, due to climate change, flash floods have become catastrophic and more frequent.
