• Overview of the research

  Wisdom of Land and Water Management:
  Facing to the global changes including hydrological changes due to global warming, establishment of efficient and sustainable water management system is a very urgent issue of the world. Especially, reorganizing water management of local level is in the core of the issue, since there managing local resources is to be directly connected to actual livelihood and well-being of the people. To make local level water management more efficient and sustainable, it is quite important to understand relation between human society and natural system established and developed based on local history and culture as well as nature. The management system cannot function effectively and continuously without deep recognition of the human-nature system, in which they observe the nature, adapt to or control it, predict and prepare for future possible changes, and succeed the system. It is a comprehensive system of wisdom of land and water, with local infrastructures, institutions and human networks.
  To solve the present water-related problems, the local wisdom of land and water should be reviewed with the current context. The wisdom is originally dynamic and flexible to changes of the conditions, and needed to be empowered to manage the impacts of rapid changes of global climate and market. It is basically impossible to prepare only one optimum design of management applicable to various areas with different natural and social conditions, while in a certain basin or region and for limited period a better system could be suggested in terms of efficiency and sustainability. Then, firstly, it is required to comprehend its functions reviewing historical development and present performances, asking sustainability of human activities on local resources. Also, the local capability of modifying and restoring the disturbed changing system is to be verified.
