  UNDERSTANDING HUMAN BEHAVIOR IN NON-MARKET SITUATIONS

• Overview of the research

  My research objectives include exploring how people evaluate non-market environmental goods/services and how people behave and make their decisions regarding such situations. Measuring preferences for non-market environmental goods/services is essential for the efficient allocation of resources achieved through cost-benefit analysis. In addition, understanding human behavior in such situations is one of the major ongoing issues in environmental, experimental, and/or behavioral economics.
  
  I have mainly worked on two fields so far. First, I have worked on discrete choice modeling applied to choice experiment data sets, which attempt to evaluate ecosystem restoration activities. Second, I have worked on experimental economics techniques to understand subject’s behavior in non-market valuation and public goods game situations. My research strengths are in conducting laboratory economic experiment studies based on theoretical framework, implementing large sample survey research applied to a specific environmental problem, and employing applied micro-econometric analysis.
  
  My current/future research interests include donation behavior including payments for ecosystem, decision making under risk and uncertainty, voluntary contributions to environmental offsets, behavioral aspects of anonymity and conformity, and information effects on consumer behavior.
  
  My relatively new field of interests includes behavioral analysis of forest owner’s participation in incentive programs. A large part of the forest land is owned by nonindustrial private forest landowners. Voluntary incentives are the most common mechanism used to encourage conservation on privately owned land. I propose a behavioral economics approach to understanding private forest owner’s participation behavior.
