Diplomatic History in the Postwar Europe and Japan, the Cultural Cold War, Anglo-Japanese Relations, Propaganda History, Music and Politics
Overview of the research
The initial focus of my research was British diplomatic history after the second world war. My Ph.D. dissertation deals with European detente and alliance politics in the 1960s and 1970s, and examines how the British Foreign Office managed NATO's unity with the US, France and FRG, while simultaneously pursuing its own détente policy. A second research focus has been put on the theatrical nature of international politics in the postwar period. My second monograph reveals how British propaganda policy attempted to spread Western as well as British values all through the world through cultural diplomacy. A third focus has been looking at the American and non-American character of jazz. Although jazz has been promoted as an "American music", my third monograph stressed that we need to shed a new light on the music's connection with modernism, communism, propaganda, the peace movement, and decolonization, and thereby reveal how the messages of jazz have been created independently from the logic of the US diplomacy. Recently, I have been working on the relationship between Japan and the UK after the second World War, with a special emphasis on the democratization process of Japan.
