He obtained his MD at the University of Tokyo in 1985. After being Visiting Professor at McMaster University in 1997 and becoming Professor and Chair in the Department of Psychiatry, Nagoya City University in 1998, he moved to Kyoto University in 2010 and retired in 2024. He currently wears three hats of clinical epidemiologist, cognitive-behavioral therapist, and psychiatrist. He does systematic reviews, runs randomized trials, performs meta-epidemiological research, and develops smartphone CBT apps. He is author and co-author of over 650 peer-reviewed original articles as well as JAMA Users' Guides to the Medical Literature 3rd Ed (McGraw Hill, 2014). He has been nominated Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher for five consecutive years since 2021. The Lancet Psychiatry ran a profile of his work and career in May 2020.
