        Establishment of clinical-grade human embryonic stem cell lines and their cell banking
      • Overview of the research

        We established the first hESC line in Japan (2003) and then established five hESC lines during the next 5 years. These cell lines were established using research-grade reagents and laboratory conditions. Therefore, the establishment of new hESC lines was needed for clinical use. According to the Japanese regulation known as “The Act on the Safety of Regenerative Medicine”, cell line derivation, its propagation, and storage were performed without feeders in an animal product-free environment after obtaining a manufacturing license from MLHW. Currently, we have established nine clinical-grade hESC lines.
