Seismicity patterns (e.g., foreshocks and aftershocks) before and after large earthquakes; Slow earthquakes; Temporal variations of seismic properties (e.g., velocity, density) of the crust; Crust and upper mantle structure
Overview of the research
My main scientific goal is to understand the physical processes that control the occurrence of earthquakes, and find ways to better assess and reduce the earthquake risk. I am currently involved in research on various aspects of earthquakes and slow-earthquakes: space-time patterns before and after large earthquakes, interaction due to stress changes, and modeling. I would like to develop comprehensive physics-based models for earthquake forecasting in Japan and currently I collaborate with researchers worldwide to accomplish this purpose. I welcome students interested in studying and doing research in Geophysics at Kyoto University to contact me. Together, learning from the past, we can reduce the risk of future major earthquakes.
