Research Topics, Overview of the research

• Research Topics

  Research and educational interests include: 1) Classical Japanese literature, with an emphasis on textual criticism and interpretation of Manyoshu poetry and other waka poetry of the pre-Heian period, 2) the teaching of Japanese, Japanese culture and Japanese literature to international students, 3) research and development of teaching materials, including web-based learning materials, for learners of Japanese

• Overview of the research

  My research attempts to reconsider the meanings of various expressions seen in the waka poetry of ancient Japan, most notably the Manyoshu, a collection of verse believed to have been compiled in the late Nara Period (8th c.). This anthology contains a number of poems for which the interpretations remain open to argument, and indeed have been the subject of much discussion. Using an empirical, evidence-based approach, my research attempts to re-analyze the individual words and expressions in the text of these poems in order to elucidate their true, original meanings as intended by their authors. Understanding the poets’ choice of words and accurately interpreting their meanings and usage are essential to furthering our understanding of the beliefs and values of the Japanese living in that time.
