Activation mechanisms of skeletal muscle metabolism induced by physical exercise, dietary constituents, pharmacological agents, bioactive compounds, hyperthermia etc., and their clinical application.

Overview of the research
I have been interested in molecular mechanisms of glucose, protein and energy metabolism in skeletal muscle, activated by various physiological and chemical stimuli including physical exercise (including muscle contraction by electrical stimulation), dietary constituents, pharmacological agents, bioactive compounds, hyperthermia etc. In particular, I have been focusing on 5’ AMP-activated protein kinase, an exercise-stimulated signaling intermediary that leads to acute glucose transport and utilization in skeletal muscle. I have been also interested in exercise prescription in humans as translational application of exercise-stimulated molecular mechanisms in skeletal muscle, and have recently been conducting a series of clinical studies to examine the hypoglycemic effects of stair ascending/descending exercise for a short period in people with type 2 diabetes.
