        We are studying developmental mechanisms of ascidian embryos and evolution of chordates
      • Overview of the research

        Ascidians are the closest relatives of vertebrates, and share many features with vertebrates. On the other hand, the genome of the ascidian is much simpler than those of vertebrates and the embryonic structure is also much simpler. These merits make this animal an ideal system for studying developmental mechanisms of early embryos. In addition, because of it phylogenetic position, understanding of developmental mechanisms of ascidian embryos directly leads to understanding of the origin and evolution of vertebrates.
