Livelihood, Economy, Society and Environment under Capitalism in Sub-Saharan Africa
Overview of the research
I emphasize the importance of multi-disciplinary approaches of geography, anthropology, ecology and agronomy and understanding all aspects of people’s lives related to the natural environment, life changes influenced by economic policies, social relationships in local communities, ethnicity, and so on. My major research regions are Southern and West Africa. In Southern Africa, I have academic interests in local knowledge of slash-and-burn cultivators, agricultural ecology, and agrarian community changes under the policy changes relating to the market economy and land tenure system. Since 2010, I have focused on foreign investment and land grabbing in Africa. In the Sahel region of West Africa, I have continued research on the land degradation mechanisms, the ecological knowledge of farmers and pastoral nomads regarding land degradation processes, and their strategies for coping with severe drought. Their ecological knowledge and daily practices regarding anti-desertification are important for establishing land rehabilitation and land care systems in the Sahel region. With the rapid population increase, the farmers and pastoral nomads are in armed conflict. I aim to try to restore land productivity using land rehabilitation methods; I also work towards resolving the social conflicts. I emphasize a multi-disciplinary approach to regional nature, ecology, and culture over time, and I aim to make contributions to solving the social problems of Africa.
