遺跡出土木製品検討から、遺跡に暮らした人々の生活や木に対峙するときの技術、人と森林とのかかわりについて研究している。縄文時代から近世までを射程に入れつつ、とくに弥生時代の農工具や生活用具について検討を深め、アカガシ亜属などの広葉樹やスギ，ヒノキといった針葉樹をどのように利用したかを、植生を基盤とした地域ごとの資源の状況も踏まえ、伐採・製材といった加工の最初の工程から、道具としての使用法、使用後の廃棄にいたる一連の流れを復元できるよう研究を進めている。
