      • Overview of the research

        Now I have study sites in sub-tropical forests in the Ogasawara islands and in seasonally dry tropical forests in Thailand. I have studied drought tolerance, photosynthesis, water relations and nutrient-use in woody plants in these forests. The precipitation in the Ogasawara islands is relatively low, especially in summer. Therefore, unique forests called "dry dwarf forest" are developed, and 70% of tree species are endemic. To conserve the unique ecosystems, the Ogasawara islands have been listed as World Natural Heritage site since June in 2011. In Thailand, there is a distinct dry season from November to February. Even in areas with a similar seasonality and annual rainfall, dry-deciduous forests and evergreen forests are found. Here, I have measured ecophysiological traits in terrestrial plants, and have examined the forest function and forming factors. According to the accumulated ecopphysiological information, I have conducted study related to forest rehabilitation in degraded forests in sub-tropical and tropical areas.
