      • Overview of the research

        Our body is made of 60 trillion cells and hundreds of billions of the cells die and are renewed with fresh ones every day. The fresh cells are constructed by using amino acids, carbohydrates and lipids contained in daily diet. Meat, grains and other food are digested, and the nutrients are absorbed from intestine. They are first delivered to liver and then transported to all the body cells to be used as materials for the cells. To maintain our life and health, absorbed nutrients should be transported properly via bloodstream to all the body cells.

        Cholesterol, one of lipids, is also a very important nutrient to construct cells. However, it has a bad reputation, because its over-accumulation destroys cells. Buildup of dead cells, in which cholesterol is over-accumulated, in artery wall hampers blood flow and causes atherosclerosis.

        Cholesterol is delivered from liver to all the body cells through bloodstream as LDL particles, so-called bad cholesterol, and excess cholesterol in body cells are reversely transported to liver through bloodstream as HDL particles, so-called good cholesterol. While both LDL and HDL particles are necessary for us, people with high LDL in blood have high risk of atherosclerosis. It is why LDL particles are called bad cholesterol.

        30 years ago, we discovered the mechanism by which lipophilic compounds are transported in our body for the first time. When our body has some defects in transporting lipophilic compounds including cholesterol, we suffer from various diseases, such as atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, skin diseases, eye diseases.

        Ueda group is trying to reveal the mechanism of lipid transport and HDL generation and to find ways to prevent and cure various diseases which trouble us.
