Research Topics
History of Buddhist Art in East Asia
Overview of the research
I take a multi-angled approach to the issues of transmission and reception of Buddhist art in East Asia with a focus on interpreting the historical information embedded in visual forms. My primary research interests are Chinese Buddhist sculptures, paintings and crafts produced from the Six Dynasties to the Southern Song, but also include Korean and Japanese arts of the concurrent periods for an in-depth view. Paying special attention to the fact that Buddhist art was a religious art and Buddhism was a foreign religion to East Asia, my work joins textual sources and physical evidence to discuss the interrelations between Buddhist activity and artistic production as well as the reception and inheritance of Indian and Central Asian elements in East Asia.
